Eugenics
I'd known about this before (Eugenics), but I did not know the name for it.
I haven't read much on the subject, but I somehow feel I don't need to: I know what I'll run into: that old old argument about unhealthy people being unworthy and worthless... Anyways, this is an incredibly depressing subject....

Perhaps you could tell us more about what eugenics is?

Ok, I will in my understanding, and with a link.
Eugenics seeks to "seed" the people born with strong genes from the weak ones. Basically a man-made "survival of the fittest", an attemp to accomplish "Superman". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugenics I think it's pure evil. Of all the evil things, they shrink in comparison with this... Quote:

Some kind of social darwinism then. Very unethical in my mind.

I think I've heard that Charles Lindbergh wanted a scientist to find his future wife based on good genes...that seems a bit connected to the topic above, no?

Yeah, in a way. Of course, humans always look for partners with "good genes" subconsciously. Like, a woman with fat depots in the right places (her breasts, her behind) sends signals to men that she's healthy and probably has a fine set of genes
You don't need a scientist to see that.

Its interesting to note that luminaries like Alexander Graham Bell, George Bernard Shaw, and Winston Churchill all openly touted the idea of eugenics and how it could be a positive thing for society as a whole. It was even taught in universities and no one really blinked until the Nazis started using it for their own perverted purposed in the 1930's. Ever since then its been synonymous with pseudoscience and virulent racial discrimination justification.

It WAS EVEN taught in universities? That's no surprise I'm sorry, but things like Socialism, Eugenics, and whatever else that seems to want to eradicate the element of spontaneity in humanity; I have to characterise them as pure evil. It's frightening to me that some people think that "Society" (whatever it may mean by then) is more important than an individual person. And what I mean is that abstract "Idealism of Perfection" (example: kill your Grandma so that you can say you have 10 dead Grandmothers) that some people seek. Economic perfection through force? Human perfection through force? What the Nazis did was only a fraction of the whole.

It's a constant theme in many sci-fi movies; "the eugenics wars".

When you say the word eugenics I immediately thinks Nazis. It is an attempt to weed out genetically 'imperfect' individuals from the population. To Hitler those imperfect individuals were the Jews. Then he expanded the definition when it became a convenient excuse to elimate people from his cabinet that made him angry.
For example a number of people within the Nazi organization in the early days were homosexual. He tolerated them. But when Ernst Rohm made him angry he started targeting homesexuals to eliminate Rohm and his friends. Thus was born the Nazi oppression of not only 'inferior' races, but of people that acted outside the accepted norms. Nazi eugenics was horrible. We all know about the concentration camps and the gas chambers made to look like showers.

On eugenics: though of course the concept is pretty scary it isn't really new; read "The Republic" by Platon.

What I meant by "Society" was the society that is no longer anyone, it is a fictional crowd, it is a weird ideal of a few for the benefit of a few. I don't care how old it is...

You are right, Plato did advocate a sort of eugenics in the Republic. I have the feeling he wasn't sure it would work, though, as he made provisions for switching around gold, silver, etc. children, if a bronze turned out to be gold material, or a gold unworthy. But yeah, the Republic is where you really see some of the flaws in his philosophy.

The Telcontorian, I do appreciate the effort you obviously put in to finding those links, but I don't want my head to explode from all the stupid, racist, hateful bull feces that is likely to spew forth. At least, not before I'm done all my errands today. (Not that I already think Eugenics is total rubbish or anything. ) Quote:
